ToggleWHAT HAPPENED?
Barca recently confirmed that teenage sensation Yamal has signed a new six-year contract until 2031, amid rising global interest. Deco has revealed the club's challenges in managing Yamal's growing fame, likening the 17-year-old's trajectory to Messi's early days. Despite widespread comparisons, the director emphasised that Yamal must be protected, given the fact he is young and the external demands placed on him.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
In 55 games across all competitions, the Barcelona star managed 18 goals and 25 assists as his side won La Liga, the Supercopa de Espana and the Copa del Rey this season. His staggering performances have resulted in comparisons to club legend Messi, and while Deco believes he can reach great heights, he says the club must be careful in managing him.

WHAT DECO SAID
Deco said: "Lamine is Lamine. Leo is Leo. Leo was the best player in the history of this club, for me, the best player in history.
"Everyone becomes crazy when they see Lamine playing football, you would pay to go watch him in the stadium, he's special and he wanted to stay because he believes in the project. He deserves an improved salary.
"He's going to be one of the best players in the world. We need to respect him as a player, but not forget he is 17 years old."
Deco added: "It's not easy to compare, but Lamine, in terms of quality, can make history like Leo. But of course, to make history, he needs to have a good team behind him.
"We try to not let him do everything, because, you know, sometimes the sponsors, and everyone wants his shirt or time. Sometimes we can't control everything, but people see his magic, on and off the pitch.
"They want to have a piece of him and we need to help him manage that."

WHAT NEXT FOR YAMAL AND BARCELONA?
Yamal will remain central to Barcelona's plans under Hansi Flick, with the club preparing for the 2025-26 season at a renovated Camp Nou. They may add a few new signings to support key players like Yamal and Raphinha as they look to compete for the Champions League next season.
