Arsene Wenger is keen on signing Manchester City wing-back Micah Richards, reports the Independent.

The Arsenal boss is looking to add strength to his defence this summer, and has identified the English right-back as the perfect man.

But a move for Richards is dependent on new City boss Manuel Pellegrini. Richards won’t be allowed to leave the Etihad if he is a big part of the Chilean manager’s plans.

It could be another frustrating transfer target for Arsene Wenger, who has struggled to sign any of his top targets. The French manager has missed out on Gonzalo Higuain, Bernard and Luiz Gustavo, while having two bids for Luis Suarez rejected.

Richards made just seven league appearances for City last season after an injury hit season, and is now set to have to fight Pablo Zabaleta for the right-back position – unless Pellegrini has a new place in the team for the Englishman.

Wenger will be hoping for Richard’s chances to be limited, so he can find some experienced competition for Bacary Sagna. Richards could come in to strengthen the Gunners’ defence, which conceded three against Aston Villa on the opening day of the season.

Would Richards do well at Arsenal? Should he move to the Gunners?
